7 Signs It's Time for a New Website
If your website is slow, hard to update, missing from Google, or no longer looks like your brand, it is probably time for a new one. A website is not a one-time project. It ages like anything else, and a dated site quietly costs you leads, trust, and search visibility every day it stays up.
Here are seven concrete signs it is time for a rebuild, and what to do about each.
The short version
- It loads slowly or breaks on phones.
- You cannot update it yourself.
- It does not show up on Google or in AI answers.
- It looks dated or off-brand.
- It gets visitors but no enquiries.
- The technology is old or insecure.
- You are a little embarrassed to share the link.
If three or more of these sound familiar, keep reading.
1. It loads slowly
Speed is not a nice-to-have. Google uses page speed as a ranking signal, and visitors abandon sites that take more than a few seconds to appear. If your pages feel sluggish on a normal connection, or your Core Web Vitals sit in the red in Google Search Console, that alone is reason to rebuild on a modern foundation.
What to do: run your site through PageSpeed Insights. If the scores are poor and small fixes do not move them, the underlying build is usually the problem.
2. It does not work well on phones
Most of your visitors are on a phone. If your site was built desktop-first and only "sort of" works on mobile (tiny text, broken layouts, buttons that are hard to tap), you are losing the majority of your audience. A modern site is designed mobile-first, not squeezed onto a small screen as an afterthought.
3. You cannot update it yourself
If changing a headline or adding a page means emailing a developer and waiting a week, your website is working against you. You should be able to make simple edits, post news, or publish a blog without friction. A site you cannot maintain is a site that slowly goes stale.
4. It does not show up on Google (or in AI answers)
Search for your business. If it does not appear for the terms your customers actually use, the site is not doing its main job. Search is also shifting: tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity now answer questions directly, and they only cite sites that are structured to be read. If yours has weak titles, no structured data, and no clear answers, it is invisible to both classic search and AI. We covered exactly how to fix this in What Is AEO and GEO.
5. It looks dated or off-brand
Design ages, and visitors judge your business by it within seconds. A site that looked sharp five years ago can quietly signal "out of date" today. If your website no longer matches how good your work actually is, or your brand has moved on and the site has not, that gap costs you trust before a prospect ever gets in touch.
6. It gets traffic but no enquiries
A website that attracts visitors yet produces no calls, forms, or messages has a conversion problem, not just a design one. The usual culprits are unclear messaging, no obvious next step, weak or hidden calls-to-action, and a contact process that is more work than it should be. A rebuild focused on the visitor's journey turns the same traffic into real leads.
7. The technology is old or insecure
If your site runs on an outdated platform, lacks HTTPS, breaks when you try to change it, or throws errors, it is a liability. Old technology is slower, harder to secure, and more expensive to maintain than a modern build. At some point, patching it costs more than replacing it.
A quick self-audit
Go through the seven signs and count your "yes" answers:
| Signs you said yes to | What it means |
|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | You are in good shape. Keep it maintained. |
| 2 to 3 | A focused refresh or partial rebuild is worth it. |
| 4 or more | It is time for a new website. |
A new site is not just a fresh coat of paint. Done right, it is faster, easier to update, built to rank in both search and AI answers, and designed to turn visitors into customers.
