How to Rank in AI Search: Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

Giriraj Swami·July 14, 2026·5 min read

To get cited by AI search engines, you need three things: content an AI can lift a clean answer from, proof of your authority spread across the web, and open access for the AI crawlers. Ranking in AI search is not about being link number one anymore. It is about being the source the answer is built from.

And it matters more every month. In 2026, Google's AI Overviews appear in roughly a quarter of all searches, and they have cut click-through on the top results by more than half. Over 60% of Google searches now end without a single click. If your brand is not inside the answer, you are invisible to a fast-growing share of your market.

Here is how to get cited.

The short version

What does "ranking in AI search" even mean?

In classic search you rank a page and hope for a click. In AI search, an engine like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews reads many sources, writes one answer, and cites a few of them. Your goal shifts from "rank number one" to "be one of the sources the answer is built from." We covered the wider idea in What Is AEO and GEO; this post is the practical how-to.

The metrics change too. Instead of only tracking keyword position, track how often you appear in AI answers (share of voice), how often your own page is the cited source, and where you sit when you do appear.

Why classic SEO is not enough anymore

Being on page one still helps, but it no longer guarantees a citation. In mid-2025, most Google AI Overview citations came from the top ten organic results. By early 2026 that share had dropped sharply, and factors like structured data, clear expertise (E-E-A-T), and complete, well-labeled answers now decide citations somewhat independently of where you rank.

There is also very little overlap between engines. Studies in 2026 found only a small fraction of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, because each one sources answers differently. You have to optimize for how each engine works, not chase a single ranking.

How do you structure content so an AI can quote it?

This is the part most brands get wrong. AI engines score passages on their own, out of context, so the easier you make a passage to lift, the more likely it is to be quoted. In practice:

  1. Answer first. Open every section with a direct, self-contained answer of about 40 to 60 words, then expand.
  2. Headings as questions. Use the real query as the H2 ("How much does X cost?") so the passage matches what the user asked.
  3. Name entities plainly. Write "GiryoTech, a creative-tech studio in Ahmedabad" rather than "we." AI systems connect clear entities to facts.
  4. Add structured data. Schema.org JSON-LD (Organization, FAQ, Article) tells the engine what your content is, not just what it says.
  5. Cite real sources. Linking to primary data makes your page look trustworthy to both readers and models.

Why do Reddit and reviews decide your fate?

AI engines look for agreement before they cite you. If the same positioning shows up across Reddit threads, YouTube videos, industry articles, review sites, and your own website, the model gains confidence and recommends you. If you only say it on your own site, that is a single unverified source.

This is why Reddit has become one of the most-cited sources in AI answers, and why reviews and press mentions now pull real weight. Getting cited is partly an off-site job: earn consistent mentions of who you are and what you do, in the places these engines already trust.

Let the AI crawlers in

None of this works if the engines cannot read your site. Make sure your robots rules allow the major AI crawlers, including OpenAI's GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Anthropic's ClaudeBot, Google-Extended (for Gemini and AI Overviews), and Bing's crawler. Block them and you become invisible to that engine, no matter how good the content is.

Expect different speeds. Fresh pages often show up in Perplexity within days, in ChatGPT and Claude within one to three weeks, and in Google AI Overviews in four to eight weeks. AI search also favours fresh content, so a visible year in your titles and regularly updated posts both help.

Your AI-search checklist

Do these seven things on every important page:

Step What it does
Lead with a 40 to 60 word answer Makes the passage easy to quote
Headings phrased as questions Matches real user queries
Name entities + add JSON-LD schema Tells engines what you are
Earn mentions on Reddit, reviews, press Builds the consensus signal
Allow AI crawlers in robots Makes you visible to each engine
Keep content current and dated AI favours fresh sources
Track citations, not just rankings Measures what now matters

Do all seven and you stop competing only for clicks, and start competing to be the answer.
